Annual Free Chlorine Burnout

Beginning October 8, 2008 the Indian Creek Water Plant and the George R Sweeney Water Plant will be switching from Chloramines as the primary disinfectant to Free Chlorine as the primary disinfectant in the distribution system. (The McKeesport system is always on a free chlorine residual). This will continue until December 20, 2008 when we will switch back to Chloramines.

This is necessary so that we eliminate any nitrification which may occur in the distribution system. Nitrification may cause bad taste and odors in the distribution system if not controlled. This time of year is especially effective for this due to the colder water temperatures.

Customers may initially smell chlorine.  This is typical with free chlorine residuals. That is normal and does not affect the safety of the water supply.
